Out of curiosity, how feasible would it be to make a tiny circuit board
containing your two chips and actually use it to replace a failed Mostek 50240?
I wonder if the voltage levels of your solution are compatible with the old
chip?
Also, I suppose that you already know about the old TOS chips, which only
generated half the musical scale? A pair of them were required to generate the
whole 12-note scale, just as with your CPLD design. You might be able to design
a drop-in replacement module for some of these old "half-scale" TOS chips. Some
of them used odd voltages, and you would have to take that into account, but it
shouldn't be too hard.
