Well, if you're talking monophonic, you could also use the old Paia system
with the digital encoder/DAC -- both were fairly simple circuits, and did
not require microprocessor control.
They were Polyphony articles that ended up in Simonton's "Friendly Stories
About Computers & Synthesizers". Might be available at Anders Sponton's
fine site; or I could mail you a copy (if you promise not to hassle me
about not charging for the copying & postage!)
