You don't necessarily need to build a "converter panel".  I like having
normalizations like the Paia modules provide, but I prefer not to use
switching jacks.  I usually put a toggle switch beside the jack for
"internal / external" sources.  This allows me to switch from the normalled
signal to the external signal without unpatching anything.  

Usually you can squeeze an extra toggle switch next to the jack without
taking up too much panel space... especially since you'll be using bananas.
 They have a very small footprint on the back of the panel, so the toggle
switch can be mounted very close to it.
