In addition to PAIA and Blacet, MOTM (www.synthtech.com), Oakley (www.oakleysound.com), and EFM (www.ele4music.com/, temporarily halted?) make kits.
I would say that one of the most significant differences is in terms of kit completeness. MOTM gives you every piece you need (including solder, except tools and a little heat-sink compound found a Radio Shack) and very explicit directions. I had never soldered before and have made a dozen or so kits. Blacet gives you all the pieces (except solder), but the directions are a lot more concise. With Oakley, you can buy any combination of the PCB (which will also get you schematic and user guide online), the pot kits, and "special" (uncommon) ICs / parts, although I would suggest that the parts aren't going to do much good without the PCB. I don't know about PAIA and EFM, though. If you go with Oakley, Larry Hendrey hosts a great page (http://www.wiseguysynth.com/larry/oakley.htm) which lists part numbers for various supply houses (Mouser, Digikey, etc).

Subject: [sdiy] Building a Modular- Paia vs. Blacet, others?
This has probably already been discussed, but I just signed up. I'm thinking
of building a modular from kits. I'm looking for opinions on Paia and Blacet
and maybe others which I am unaware of. I'm leaning towards Blacet at this
point. I'd like the system to be versatile, strange as possible and easy to
add to. I'm concerned about panel sizes, power supplies and MIDI interfaces.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Robert
