I use a crappy radio shack desoldering iron for wire components, the one
with the vacuum ball integrated into the desoldering tip.. Yes, its kind of
a pain to have to clear the passage each time, but if you have lots of
solder points to deal with it is quicker and cheaper than wick.. You have to
be careful with these, because they can really tear up traces if you aren't
careful enough.
As for SMT/BGA parts, I use a Weller "Princess" heat gun.. Yeah, its not a
manly "Bosch" blowtorch model, but it has a very small nozzle, heats very
well and its quiet. It works faaar better than those heated tongs and
squares you can buy, and you can actually use it for BGA/thru-hole stuff
too.. After using this, I ditched the idea of tongs/heated squares.. Besides
that, you can use it for heat shrink. They are about 50 usd.
Just let the part slide off! ;) Works great, and I haven't torn a pad since!
