Definatly the 9700. I'm not sure that the designs are
"inspiring", but I really think you're going to be
hard pressed to get "more" synth for the money.  It is
1v/oct and midi controllable with 2VCO and 2VCF both
multimode, 2VCA, ringmod, noise, AD/ADSR that function
as lfo's for $450.  If you don't like the normaled
design, make your own faceplates and break everything
out to individual jacks.

I haven't really seen the madmouse, I've tried to find
info on it and other efm stuff, but for some reason,
it's elusive.  But, from what I understand, it would
be even cheaper, and a bit more inspiring with 2600
vcos and a korg filter design.  However, from what
I've read on the efm list, it's not as "beginner"
oriented as the paia stuff is.
