Antti,
It sounds like you have the right idea on doing the star ground. But!
Anything hooked on the digital side of things should go to the digital
ground. I'd assume that the voltage reference is for the DAC and would go to
analog ground. This can cause big problems. The current flow can get all
screwed up and effect the voltages. Also check your connections and make
sure you have enough current for the circuit to operate. Things like this
can happen if a ground is hooked up wrong or if there are ground pins on
chips left open or the circuit is drawing to much current.
I've done a fair amount of work with audio DACs/ADCs and power/grounding is
absolutely critical. You might grab some of the Crystal audio converter and
eval board data sheets and read/review what they do for grounding and power.
