Hi list,
Sorry to respond this late, but thanks to all of you who responded to my
question about a low-budget, SDIY-compatible frequency counter / tuner 8-)
>From the many responses I got, the option of using a PC-based
shareware/freeware program looked like a very good idea. So I tried almost
every available program from the links you all gave me and IMO the two
programs listed below are the most usefull ones for calibrating SDIY stuff:
--------------------------------------------------
1) G-tune 1.22
features:
- frequency counter (range: 30 - 5500 Hz, resolution 0.01 Hz)
- tuner with tuning needle and note detection
- oscilloscope
- spectrum analyser
pro's:
- fast
- precise
- lots of features
- cheap
cons:
- tuning needle a bit hard to read from a distance
- no tuning error percentage in digits

Note: this program is shareware: not all features are tweakable in the free
version, like for instance the tuner reference frequency.
------------------------------------------
2) Audio Phonics Instrument Tuner 1.02
features:
- tuner with tuning needle, error percentage in digits and note indication
pro's:
- fast
- precise
- large user interface
- cheap
cons:
- tuner doesn't work for higher frequencies (there isn't a range mentioned
anywhere)
- program eats a lot of CPU time (at least on my Pentium 200MMX)

Note: this program is freeware.
--------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion:
If G-tune would have an error percentage in plain digits, I'd use that
program for all my frequency measurements (in the audio range that is ;).
Cheers,
Martijn
