Exactly. Now you get it.

Right.
Now, please notice that the VCA is responsible for actually changeing
the amplitude, but the change of amplitude is done by the ADSR which
does it's Attack-Decay-Sustain-Release sequence under the control of
the Gate signal.

Should work, but I've only bumped into that page once before some time ago.
Full fledged DIY style or not, don't put up too high obsticles when
you start! If there is some good kit or so around, use it.
