Actually, there are as many levels of DIYers as there are DIYers..
but, otherwise, I agree entirely with Paul Schreiber on this.

And, I think it is true to say, that even though DIY is not a
cheap hobby (cheap compared to many, though) synth building is one 
of the very very few areas where you can build something for less
than you can buy it for (if we are talking modular synths).

Designing circuits is DIY, building kits is DIY, buying modules 
readymade and making a polished cabinet for them is DIY.

I can't see that anyone who is interested in any one of these 3 aspects 
will be discouraged by posts on the other two.
