I have some DS1220s used for the same purpose on a different machine:
replacing the two 6116s on the GS1 such that I can extract the patch data
(as well as eliminate the external batteries).

Now, I encountered a problem: since the 1220s I have go into ram protect
mode at Vcc=4.5V (or below), I was getting odd results from the GS1 when
using them in place of the 6116s. It turns out the -7V to -12V (thats how
they powered the microcontroller board) power supply was actually around a
delta of 4.5V--right where the DS1220s go to sleep.

It may be you are not getting quite enough voltage to power them in your
2.2. Is there a diode in the Vcc to your sram sockets?

I have a 1983 Hitachi memory databook here somewhere..I'll hunt it up
and scan the data for the 6116LP-3.
