i would like to connect the 13 pin analog output of my akai s612 sampler to
the 13 pin input of my akai ax73 synth. apparently, i need two male 13 pin
din plugs (sd-130 from digikey). my question is what kind of cable should i
hook these together with? is there such a thing as a 13 conducter cable with
different colors? i'm not very familiar with the terminology so any search
hints would be greatly appreciated.
thanks.

I just happed to have the spec for that connection. However, the copy I
have is difficult to read and I am certain it would not be any good through
scanning. Here is the deal:

This is a 6 voice parallel audio connection. While the connector is 13 pin,
only 7 of them are used.
Numbering is like this:

        13
9 10 11 12
5 6 7 8
1 2 3 4
        K

K- the key that aligns the plug I think this is referenced looking at the
jack on the back of the unit. But, the drawing does not say whether is it
looking at the front of back. But, you should be able to figure that out
based on the connections to it.

Pin 1 = voice 3
Pin 2 = voice 2
Pin 3 = voice 1
Pin 4 = common ground / shield
Pin 5 = not connected
Pin 6 = voice 6
Pin 7 = voice 5
Pin 8 = voice 4
Pin 9 through pin 13 not used

The outer metal part of the connector is also connected to ground. That
should help you locate pin 4 as they are shorted together.

The cable does need to be shielded as it is low level audio. All signals
are unbalanced.
