[sdiy] Anyone ever build a sampler?

I build a vary simple device.
With my eprom prgrammer i program raw 8-bit sample data into an eprom
(taken from old computers).
I took 2 7-bit binary counters (together 14-bit) and a simple 555-oscillator.
Connected the output of the counters to the adres input of the eprom, and a
simple 8-bit D/A converter to the data-output of the eprom, and i can play
samples.
I even put switches in the adres lines witch give a quite cool effect.

I was thinking of making a delay on the same principal, using static ram
(cache memory chips of old 486 pc's)
