You can easily stick a scope in the output, and see what it does.
It you're lucky, it as the x and the y on different pins.
Then it has a trick to distinguish -x from +x and -y from +y.
Most members of the mice family, say ----_--"--- for the
one, and ------"--_---- for the other.
If your not lucky, it has a way of decoding the trackerball
output into data. Though some might it find easy to convert
that to a CV.
You might want to tap into a different place on the print.
You could even decide to only use the leds and photorestors
near the wheels, and code them yourself.
First step ito convert to anlogue, might be a speed to voltage
convertor, which is basically a lowpass over the outputs.
Then, for the + and - you could add in a logic chip to recognize
direction. I'd have to think hard how to do that, and I should be
in bed.
