Acronyms comes from the greek and it means 'heads of names'. Certain web
based dictionaries do make the claim that only initialisations that can
be pronounced should be rightly called 'acronyms'. However, opinion on
this varies.

I checked with my 1960 version of the concise OED and its not in there.
Either way, its not worth losing any sleep over...
