Personally, I hate digital delays[1] and love BBDs but everyone has their
own preference.

Something else thats also been used are spinning magnetic disks.  I have a
morley echo pedal that uses one and if I could find some transformer oil
that wasnt a deadly poison[2], maybe it would work again.  I've experiemented
a little bit with using old 5.25" harddisk platters and making a disc
delay like this but have never spent enough time on the mechanics to 
get it "right"[3].  The theory works okay tho.  This really is just like
a tape delay tho.

[1] okay. I love the ElectroHarmonix 16second Digital Delay
[2] deadly poison as defined by the US gov't.
[3] when the first one flew apart, it didnt kill me
