But they did. I don't know who came up with the "Dual" Mode.
Maybe Oberheim with the OB-Xa ? My OB-8 at least has two
completely independent Layers, routed to two separate
outputs if I pan all upper voices to lest and lower voices
to right. (OB-Xa had this feature as well, only that the panpots
are trimmers inside.) 

In practice, I never do this, as sligtly
panning the voices to different locations in *ordinary* mode 
is much more fun than Dual mode with hard-panned voices, IMO.
