[sdiy] matrix ICs

I was wondering if any DIYers have experience with the various crosspoint matrix
ICs. I'm most familiar with the ones made by Mitel, although I know that AD
also makes them, as does Intersil. I also recall that someone (Harris?) makes
an 8 x 8 matrix as part of their HC/HCT line.

My main interest in these ICs is, of course, audio applications (not necessarily
of an exclusively synth nature). I could see an application for CV matrices as
well if they were sufficiently linear.

The most recent matrix IC I found was on the Intersil website; here's the
datasheet URL for those who want to take a look:

http://www.intersil.com/Data/FN/FN4/FN4153/FN4153.pdf

This is an 8 x 8 "video crosspoint switch", the HA456. I haven't had a close
enough look myself to tell whether it is suitable for audio.

If anyone has built anything with these devices, I'd love to hear about it!

Thanks,
-PRH
