Organs, pretty much.  These are a system of dividers that
produce the pitches of a 12 note equally tempered scale.
I have two here.  Many years ago I made a four voice
polyphonic synth with a 1 (one) megahertz microprocessor
and one of them.  It worked quite well, but lacked the
charm of an analog synth.  Portamento is not possible or 
at least not very easy to do with this sort of thing.
The part I used was MK50240, Mostek I think.  I keep thinking
about putting it back together since the micro still works,
circa 1978 I think (SWTPC 6800).
