Rob,
I started with the Motorola uC but when it came time to go into production
they put us on allocation so phooey with them. Then I used the PIC for a
couple of products for AMC Weltronics and they worked great. They are a
clunky machine though, you have to keep track of jumping across memory page
boundaries and fight with the cel phone folks for chips. The ATMEL AVR parts
however are elegant and as you point out easy to get. And if you like C,
CodeVision AVR is really good.
