[sdiy] Attack of the Newbie II: Questions

Hi folks,

Here's a bunch of questions...

1. Has anyone ever had any faceplate items powder coated? If so,
was it expensive?

1b. I had heard that Letraset does custom dry transfer decals which,
although I can have silkscreening done, I'm very curious about because
I could then have more control over entire DIY process. Has anyone had these
done? Expensive? I've visited the Letraset site but no pricing or real
info is given.

2. I am interested in building some noise gate circuitry, specifically
for running analogue drum sounds through. Would anyone out there know of a
proven schematic for such a thing? It does not need an attack control as I'd
want the gates to open as fast as possible. I would say input key triggers
wouldn't be necessary either, as long as the leading edge of the incoming
audio signals won't get cut off. MOST importantly - it needs to be silent
when the gates close! I had a unit that featured 12 gates (manufactured by
John Oram!) in a single space rack which was a dream, but when the gates
closed, you heard:

ffffffip! (quite annoying, so I got rid of it)

So, I'm on the hunt for something that I can build that won't have this
'problem'.

2b. Is this too hard for a newbie and should I just back away slowly?

3. Does anyone on this list offer DIY type services - circuit design,
circuit assembly, repair, mods etc? I think I can build a kit but I have
plans for a few things which require repair and/or mods and might not
be able to figure that stuff out myself.

Kind regards to all,
