NE-58 are a gas discharge (neon) lamp. These were
often used as we would use zener diodes today, as
shunt regulators.
I'm not POSITIVE but I think the little black dot
meant that the tube used an ionization source
(radioactive) to stabilize the firing point.
Anyone willing to admit to being MUCH older than
me ???
