[sdiy] diode breakage

i bought this lot of 200 1N60's off of ebay and first used them the
other day.  i could barely get them in the holes in the perfboard
without them shattering in half.  is this a frequent problem with
germanium diodes?  the ones i bought new from mouser i could manhandle
quite a bit and none of them ever broke.  is this an age thing?
