Don't you agree that a three-way sounds better than a two-way?
(Yea, too many issues to say one way or the other.)
There are *way* too many issues going on to make a generalization.
Especially with so many examples of excellent sounding two-way
speakers. Most studio monitors for instance.
With more frequency bands you also have more combined phase shift,
more time delays between drivers, more dependencies on the position of
the listener and so forth.
But for loud applications, three and four way systems do make a lot of
sense, certainly.
Yes, the moron DJ may have had the Bass and the Treble cranked
up. Thump and sizzle. He also had the speakers mounted too close to
the floor and only the bass reached the back of the dance floor.
DJs also have specialized equipment for maximizing the thump and
sizzle. Sub octave boxes for instance.
