Been there. Three examples of soldering accident, one
to me, the others to ex colleagues (no, they're not dead,
I've just moved job).

Hollow solder pins - I think they're called "Stocco" pins.
While desoldering them, something inside expanded
or vaporised (air, flux?), firing a blob of solder into the
corner of my eye. No lasting damage as far as I can see...

Steel wire - used on some (Sennheiser) headphones.
It's much springier than copper wire. When you desolder
it, it can throw solder with considerable force. Went in
someone's eye. No serious damage fortunately.

Finally, someone desoldering wires from a tag block.
The solder was old, and he pushed the iron hard up
against the bottom of the tag to make better contact.
The iron slipped. It missed his eye - went up his nose!!!!
(This really happened - I've seen the accident report).

So, wear goggles, but maybe a nose guard is O.T.T.
