Afaik, the Aphex Aural Exciter mults the signal, runs one copy through a
HPF then a "harmonic generator" (basically a diode clipper, if it were in
their Dominator it would be called a "non-linear limiter"), and then mixes
it back in at a lower level with the original signal.

Crossover distortion occurs in Class B amplifier stages.
