Individuals?

You mean like John Blacet or Paul Schreiber?

John Blacet - Blacet Research: http://www.blacet.com/

Paul Schreiber - MOTM: http://www.synthtech.com

Paul Perry and Frostwave for excellent analogue modular effects:
http://www.frostwave.com/

Check out Tony Allgood and Oakley Systems as well:

Maybe Gene Stopp and the ASM-1 is what you had in mind:

I think it would be a mistake to overlook someone just because they happen
to sell their work commercially. All these people are on one or more of the
usual mailing lists - this one, Analogue Heaven, Benders Yahoo Group, etc.
and in my experience are very willing to talk to you about their work - in
alot of cases there's also an active user community backing the stuff up.

Good luck.

JP
