thanks for all the replies. i finally got something to work!
here's the osc i'm basing my project around.. nice sounding pw to me,
tho stability characteristics aren't a factor for this project. might be
useful for like-minded newbies.
i neglected to record the name of the book that i xeroxed the original
(changed it a bit for wider pitch range) from several years ago was from
a different era i guess.. because to the best of my knowledge there is
no book available today that functions as both an introduction to
electronics and sdiy. it's a crime. i really have a mind to go and nick
it from the uni :) (kididng)

i'm running this puppy off a 9v cell using the suggested method of
creating the ground by running two resistors from the + and - leads.. i
used 33k resistors, works fine.
plopping a 1uf capacitor between the ground and pin 1 of the 741 makes
some great sounds too :) i am the newest newbie prize?
