>Hmm... I'd really love to go there...
>Did you bump into the good gentleman Tony Allgood?
More likely to bump in Colin Fraser than me. I live in Penrith. Which
although its very close to the border, its very much in England. In the
seventeenth century around here, one could get seriously hurt for
getting the two sides mixed up.
And you can get quite close to that very same atmosphere late on a
Saturday night in Carlisle :-)
Totally off-topic anecdote: When I first came up to live in Cumbria I
was visting a local town called Kirby Stephen, I got into a conversation
with a very old local farmer. I said I had moved up to live in Appleby,
eight miles up the road.
'Nay lad, yer don't want to live there' Why not I asked. 'They were on
the wrong side'. In the county cricket championship, I said trying to
knowledgable. 'Nah, you daft bugger, the king, they supported the King'.
Confused, I left him to it, but someone explained later that he really
didn't like Appleby. And they did indeed support the King. In the
English Civil War in 1644. He really was very old... or having me over
:-)
