[sdiy] kinda OT: ASR10 cooling mods.

While I have no experience with the sampler you mention, I have a piece of
gear that had similar problems. Mine is the Simmons SPM8:2 mixer with
program storage. I used it a lot for gigs since I could automate all my
mixes. It has a 8 x 2 mixer with EQ, 2 effects sends and returns and all
built into one rack space (including the power supply).

That puppy would get hot (even when leaving a space empty above it) and
start doing strange things. I did just what you are contemplating. I took
the case off and drilled it full of exit air holes in one location and
mounted one of those small quiet little square box fans with appropriate
hole so that the air moved right across the offending parts. That was all
it took to solve my problem. My fan was rated at 12 volts DC. I powered
with a 9 volt wall wart since these things typically run a little high when
lightly loaded.

So, I think this is a reasonable solution for some equipment that is
designed a little too tight considering heat. It sure worked for me.

Hi all, my good friend has an asr 10 and an eps 16+ , and both of these
units, (especially the ASR-10) get very hot and then get unreliable. My
friend wanted to put some vents in it and then put some small fans there to
cool the unit. he asked for my help (the poor bugger), so I think
basically,
running it from 9v batteries or external powersupply so as to not risk the
asr-10, and placing them over where the vents will be externally, unless
there is space inside, which somehow I doubt.

the other Idea was to maybe add some heat sinks to the processor chip(s) to
help in the cooling. if there are heatsinks there already then it would
just
be a question of making bigger ones fit inside, but if there aren''t any
there, do you guys think it's a good Idea, how could be atach them to the
chips? heat sink compound?

has anyone done this to an ensoniq sampler?

thanks

Eduardo
