Several people have emailed me suggesting the little white chips might be
Vactrols.  I don't think so, partly because they're too small (about 1 mm
thick), and because it would mean there are nine Vactrols and only one op
amp, which would be an unusual design to say the least.

I mananged to get Carl Countryman's email address, so I've emailed him and
will hopefully get some details from the man himself.

Vactrols (LDR+LED pair)? Often used in phase shifters...
Maybe just LDR but then it should have LED or a bulb somewhere...
