I cannot imagine not having a local hard drive copy of one's website. That
seems as essential to me as hard drive backs ups and such. I am a complete
newbie to web site construction, and have only recently stared using
relative links. But, all my website development is actually done on my
local hard drive and then uploaded FTP to my site once I have it complete
and working as it should. relative links was a revelation to me (with
significant help from others). But I like it because I can make sure all of
my coding is correct on my hard drive before I even up load it.
While we are OT, and I know a lot of you guys do web sites, I have a
question.
I have found that when viewing the same website from various computers, the
text and graphics vary in size and format because of local display set ups
at the users PC. I put in hard returns on much of my text so that it
remains relative to the graphics when a PC is set to very high resolution
display. But, even that is not ideal. I have had some success putting text
into boxes (like tables). However, even that is not always producing the
exact consistency I seek.
Perhaps some of you who do a lot of this could e-mail me privately with some
of your basic technique ideas. I am not into frames and fancy stuff. Just
easy and universal (ha) formatting. So far, while a limited tool, I have
done all my development using the simple, but easy to use MS Word.
Thanks,
Larry Hendry
P.S. While the content is yet to be retrieved, I see Mark has the site for
Midiwall up and running again.
