No, DEFINITELY don't lose hope on that theory..There is so much equipment to
be had right now various places, it's not even funny, (at least in
massachusetts there is..) if you want something, the best thing to do is call
around various places that you think might have what you're looking for lying
around, and sooner or later you'll find somebody who has it, doesn't want it,
and will give it to you for free. I do computer salvage professionaly, and if
you're in the right place at the right time you can get all sorts of goodies
either for free or for disgustingly low prices (somebody I know picked up a
couple Compaq alpha servers with quad 1Ghz EV6 processors and 6 or so GB of
memory for $3k a piece) (I dragged home 3 powerbooks and half a dozen
powermacs and higher end 68k machines yesterday..didn't cost me a thing...)
As far as rack rails are concerned, let me know how many you need..I've got a
few full depth ones (maybe 2 feet long) in the garage that you can have for
the cost of postage.
I've gotten all the rack boxes and blank panels I need to build a decent
sized modular for nothing, plus 100 spools of hookup wire and all the pots
and switches I'm likely to need...just need to find the time now : (
anybody need trimpots? (1K if I recall correctly) I've got 10,000 or so that
I'm never going to use most of..
