Silicon Controlled Rectifier, sometimes known as a Thyristor (electronic
switch). Think of it as a high current diode with a low current trigger
control. No current flow until triggered then continuous current. When
current is stopped then the SCR resets. A triac is similar except that
current can flow either direction when triggered. Triacs are used in light
dimmers.
