[sdiy] PCB Layout terminology

You need some data books !
(preferably old ones that have less surface mount parts)

There is a designation called JEDEC (Joint engineering something...blah
blah...?)

They have standard package outlines... like

TO-18 (transistor outline) a small metal can
TO-5 a bigger metal can size of a pencil eraser
TO-3 a power package in a pork pie hat shaped metal can

TO-92 a common small transistor plastic package
TO-220 a power transistor package with a metal tab... some voltage
regulators come in this package.

You start with the device number, look up a data sheet, then select the
correct package.

Yes the 2N3904 / 3906 come in the TO-92 package... but any small transistor
might be housed in the same package.
