I've been using these "crappy" little things for 25 years; they work
fine! They are excellent for spot voltage requirements on boards and for
reference voltages they are pretty close to more expensive devices in
performance. If you use the LM317L and LM337L you can adjust to a wide
range of voltages with a trimmer.

Just don't try to use them for a lot of current (100mA max and that
might need a heatsink).
