No... the other way is better. Inserting a mono plug will give you
direct access to the next stage of the desk. Bypassing the EQ and
pre-amp stage. Much more useful for line level effects units and if you
have a fault in live situtaions. Shorting out the insert-sends is not a
problem because they are usually fed with a 1K resistor and the output
is zero volts anyway because there shouldn't be anything connected to
the pre-amp.
Of course best of the lot is balanced send and returns on separate
XLR/TRS jacks.
