There was some talk a while back about the jacks on the back 
of a scope. Here's a couple things I've used the outputs for:

TRIGGER - use the gate output jack to trigger a counter or 
strobe. The trigger on a scope is a lot more flexible than 
on a frequency counter, plus you can see what it's really 
triggering on. Set the sweep rate so there is a about 1/4 
of the period showing so you don't lose any cycles during 
the scope's retrace time.

PREAMP - a lot of scopes have an output that is from one 
of the vertical amps. Usually something like 10 mV/div 
into 50 ohms. Not affected by horz sweep rate, triggering, 
and such. So it can act as a high input impedance preamp 
for something like a spectrum analyzer with a 50 ohm input. 
Maybe preamp is not such a good name because you can't 
get much gain.
