Oh, oh... i am not so an old timer, but when i was at the university in
munich, we did throw out much old stuff (tube power supplies, 
really ancient scopes, and parts). They did also have a carton
od really old looking capacitors (black, made from paper tube and
with tar over the ends) that had values in "mF" written on them. The
guy who had them saw my look at them and said "these are in the
millifarad range, good for power supplies".
But even these caps were microfarads for sure.

>From what i know now, i would say they are from the 30´s or 40´s, and
at that time i would not expect somebody to build a cap in the millifarad
range that was as small as those things.
