Having worked for a contract manufacturer, I can tell you nearly 75% of
designs have restrictions on parts replacement. Up to and including "do not
substitute" restrictions.

There is an awesome amount of bad engineering that happens on a day to day
basis in the business world. I worked on a metal detector where 50% of the
parts were there to fix problems with the first half (only at some
temperatures).

synth-DIY types have an aesthetic bent, so they can see some "art" in the
science. There are precious few engineers who feel this way. The businesses
who employ them are still profitable. Not as profitable as they could be,
but still going.
