I know sometimes it's just for economy. A circuit that calls for one OTA
has an extra one if you are using one of the dual packages like
LM13600/13700 or CA3280. I noticed that on TomG's moog ladder filter.
I've also seen OTA's used warp a triangle into a sine by overdriving the
inputs - this would also use a fixed gain.
