I always use the compound. It is made of silicon grease and zinc oxide
which gives it better heat conductivity (I think). It usually is white,
but I've seen it colored pink or blue from some manufacturers. I'll bet
the Radio Shack compound is the same stuff I use from another
manufacturer.
