"The Electronic Drum Cookbook" is out of print.  I have built the ADV-Bass 
module, and it sounds pretty good.  I wouldn't say it rivals a 909 or Xbase 
kick, however.  I've been toying around with some mods to make it sound a 
little better, but it isn't one of my higher priority projects right now.  It 
could definitely use a second EG section (independent sweep for VCA and 
pitch).  

Just taking a stock ADV-Bass and following it with distortion and/or a 
resonant LPF can yield some pretty good sounds.
