So you're edge-lighting the panel with the LED's?
In that case the most effective (not necessarily the easiest) thing to do
is etch the graphics into the plastic. One way would be be to cut a mask
and sandblast the face every so slightly.
I've been pondering such thinks myself and I'm very curious to see how
other make out.

Aside from the above, there's always using photographic film from an
imagesetter instead of a laserprinter.
