quite effective at reducing hiss, and doesn't seem to change the guitar's
dynamics at all. I'm not sure that I've ever seen a compander built into
any
other distortion device.
BTW, another excellent box for this type of sound is the BOSS Blues Driver
(which uses overdriven differential transistor stages to get its
distortion).
Both of these pedals are great for that sort of Keith Richards/Chuck Berry
just-barely-distorted rhythm guitar sound (like a Fender amp turned up to
about 7 or 8). Great for recording!
I've got the schematic for the Yamaha if anyone wishes to see it.>
Would very much like to see the Yamaha (and Boss) schematic as the recording
side appeals to me. Since you're obviously into unusual/rarer OD/distortions
have you ever tried the Zoom 5000 aka Zoom Driver pedal? It wasn't available
for very long but is my favourite and I have never bothered working out the
principle as it's SMT and a couple of boards. Also it's never gone wrong. I
think it's pretty standard 4558s. Because of it's built in noise expander
('Zoom Noise Reduction'- very unintrusive) it can really pack a punch
because you don't hear anything, not even a bleed at close to max
distortion, until you play. It also has a big but tight low end making it
great for bass guitar. If anyone has the circuit I'd love to see it.
