As Peter has mentioned, Telefunken was the company I couldn't remember the
name of earlier.
Unless I'm mistaken, the DBX 3BX was only an expander, and didn't have a
matching compressor section. It was meant for dynamic range expansion, and
was not used the in the same manner as their popular tape noise reduction
system. (Of course, their noise reduction system has potential applications
other than tape recording, as well.)
Perhaps if you had access to Telefunken style companding, you might have
liked the results better than the DBX. There was also some sort of
proprietary tape noise reduction scheme from Tandberg, but I don't think it
used companding.
