Yes, keep them separate. In a modular its actually cheaper to have four
separate sockets than one socket and a good switch. In a polysynth voice
card you can use one 4016 or whatever to do the switching. It doesn't
take much room and requires just three data lines to switch it. You
would need two to have '1 of 3' action anyway. Interestingly the
Oberheim polys chose to use only the saw and square outputs of the
CEM3340. Probably to save on this one line. Shame because a triangle is
a nice addition. The ability to mix saw with the triangle gives a very
strong fundamental.
