[sdiy] separate waveform outputs ?

I'm working on a VCO and need some advice.  I started to build on/off
switches for triangle, pulse, and sawtooth, mixed into a single VCO
output, as that's what I'm used to from my experience with machines
using preset signal paths (Prophets, Oberheims, etc).  Recently I've
looked at pictures of modular VCOs and noticed that they have separate
outputs for each waveform; is this something that's used a lot, and
something you'd recommend that I include?  Is it common to process each
waveform separately, or use VCAs to mix or crossfade between them; or
would I probably not be limiting myself too much by continuing with my
design having one combined VCO output?
