I dont think you can use solder effectively without some sort of flux.. you 
could demonstrate by collecting the little blobs of solder which now have 
little or no flux in them and try to solder something.. the results are 
usually particularly poor..
Plumbers etc often use a liquidy acid based flux.. this is particularly bad 
for circuits, as some Japanese mfr's in the 70's found out when their 
products all started corroding away.. also, this seems to be much more 
irritating / acrid fumes, I think it may well be much more toxic. I dont 
know if there is any non toxic kind of alternate flux.. prolly anything 
which creates semi combusted vapours/ microparticles will have some form of 
irritating effect.

Lead free solder is available.. I tried it out and IMO the results are not 
as good as lead solder, it's much more crystalline in nature, looks like 
poor quality soldering/dry joint. I prefer the lead solder , wash 
thouroughly after contact...
