I dont think you can use solder effectively without some sort of flux.. you
could demonstrate by collecting the little blobs of solder which now have
little or no flux in them and try to solder something.. the results are
usually particularly poor..
Plumbers etc often use a liquidy acid based flux.. this is particularly bad
for circuits, as some Japanese mfr's in the 70's found out when their
products all started corroding away.. also, this seems to be much more
irritating / acrid fumes, I think it may well be much more toxic. I dont
know if there is any non toxic kind of alternate flux.. prolly anything
which creates semi combusted vapours/ microparticles will have some form of
irritating effect.
Lead free solder is available.. I tried it out and IMO the results are not
as good as lead solder, it's much more crystalline in nature, looks like
poor quality soldering/dry joint. I prefer the lead solder , wash
thouroughly after contact...
Cheers,
Dan
