[sdiy] My $0.02 on Panel Design - Computer Cases!

I thought of a good idea for a panel design, and if done right it would work
well.......
AND IT'S FREE (relatively speaking).
If you have an old pc you are getting rid of, or perhaps your local PC
service center/swap meet has old computer cases that are dirt cheap
(emphasis on the dirt hehehe).
A tower case is what I have in mind, but I suppose a desktop would work ok
somehow.
Most tower case covers are steel, in an inverted U shape. You could just cut
a single panel and use that, or cut out two panels and affix them parallel
(one for the boards, one for the panel). Perhaps hinge somehow?
But my idea is to cut the case cover plain in half longitudinally, so you
have two L shaped pieces. Hinge them together, then install some bolts/nylon
standoffs for the circuit boards in the back. Arrange some method of
securing the hinged pieces closed once built and working. (even a 2x4 could
work for this).
The other side is a nice steel, painted, smooth, durable panel. You could
trim the back down so it would fit in a rack with a little work.
A brainstorm for the day, anyway.
PS - I happen to work at a computer repair shop in the Detroit area, so if
anyone needs a case, we often have 'throw-away' cases to use. Just let me
know! You supply your own vacuum cleaner, fantastik and paper towels. ;)
